Why are Step-Families Different?
Step-families are in some ways like first-time-round families. They
are also, in many other ways, vastly different. Most people who become
a part of a step-family are unprepared for the differences. These

contrast between a misguided and an effective approach to stepparenting

a key to success in the stepfamily. Clearly, the effective stepparent
works with
accurate information and chooses specific behaviours to build toward
positive
relationships.

About 10 percent of children are living in stepfamilies, and the number
is growing. Due primarily to the high rate of divorce and remarriage,
children often find themselves sharing a household with a new
stepparent and his or her children.
